Debian

foss_stub

Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. When most people talk about Debian, they probably mean Debian GNU/Linux: a distribution of software comprising of the linux kernel and associated userspace utilities (where the core base of the userland is formed from GNU utilities).

Unlike microsoft_windows, Debian provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 51000 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine.
