Membership Application Process - Director's Guide

These are the things you need to know if someone wants to join the space!

The most important difference between this and the other page is the contents of an email to send to someone.

Procedure

Guests are permitted limited access to the space during open events (e.g. Tuesday Open Nights or when a member opens the space for all) or when accompanied by a member of the space. However they are not permitted use of the space tools or consumables outside of the guest allowance. Guests wishing to become members are asked to follow the procedure below. An email (contents also below) should be sent to the new member for return to the public discussion list.

  1. The member is notified of any negative outcome within 7 days of the application date via email by the tasked board member. Assuming no negative outcome, the new member is invited to visit the member account registration page at https://guest.id.57north.org.uk/register.
  2. Finally to complete your registration visit the member login area from the main site (or https://hub.57north.org.uk/hub), login and click the application button.

Email to send to prospective members

Fit like!

It was good to say hi on Tuesday - thanks for coming in! It's always great to see new faces appear. You're very welcome to come back in when we're open or on open days. Once you've been a couple of times, we'd love it if you consider becoming a member - you'll get door access to the space whenever you want, free use of tools, storage etc and the ability to run events in the space as and when you wish. Details are at: https://www.57north.org.uk/membership

It's worth keeping an eye on the mailing lists, as that's where a key part of our activity happens:

-Announce is where we tend to announce open nights and events, often people will post if they're going in on another day (for example, I'm heading in on Saturday!) https://lists.57north.org.uk/mailman3/postorius/lists/57north-announce.lists.57north.org.uk/

-discuss is general chitchat and nonsense, feel free to post links & interesting stuff to it! https://lists.57north.org.uk/mailman3/postorius/lists/57north-discuss.lists.57north.org.uk/

For more real time communication and hanging out, we're on irc: #57n at libera.chat - you can learn some ways to get online or use the web client at https://libera.chat/guides/connect

We've also finally started a signal group for modern group chat that lives on mobiles and desktops: [link]

I hope you enjoyed coming to say hi on Tuesday, any feedback you've got will help us do things a little better!

Cheers,

How to receive announcement emails and take part in group email discussions

The following is a quick guide on joining our two main mail-lists:

Our 57north-announce@lists.57north.org.uk list is mainly used for open announcements by organisers and 'holds on' to emails from people until a list moderator approves it to go out.

Our 57north-discuss@lists.57north.org.uk list allows subscribed people to email out to all automatically once they are subscribed . “Reply” buttons clicked when reading announcement emails *should* automatically use 57north-discuss@lists.57north.org.uk to send their reply but some email apps don't do this properly, sadly.

To receive announcement emails (if you don't already), you need to join/subscribe to the so-called 'announce mail-list'. To join, navigate to: https://lists.57north.org.uk/mailman3/postorius/lists/57north-announce.lists.57north.org.uk/

To send emails to the group, or to respond back to the group (if your cannot do this already), you need to join/subscribe to the so -called 'discuss mail-list'. To join navigate to: https://lists.57north.org.uk/mailman3/postorius/lists/57north-discuss.lists.57north.org.uk/

Acceptance Email

Hello!

The directors are pleased to confirm we are more than happy to accept your membership of the hackerspace!

Immediate next steps are to do the following 2 activities: 1) Arrange Payment: either furnish someone with money or set up a bank transfer for £20 per month with the following details: Account Name: 57North Hacklab Ltd Account Number: 11 088 091 Sort Code: 83-15-31 Reference: preferred username

2) Sign up for ID by going to https://hub.57north.org.uk/hub/, find the mystery apply button I’ve been told exists and that should be you. We’re working on streamlining this process because like most stuff it’s pretty clunky and not well thought out at the moment! Patches/rewrites/etc to hackhub are welcome[1]!

Helpful info:

You will be able to open the back door at your leisure. Once you're signed up, information lives at https://hub.57north.org.uk, specifically https://hub.57north.org.uk/hub/door

The two key points are: The front/back door code is available on hackhub and there is an unlock button online for the back door at hub. There is an option for this to be saved to a bookmark so you don't need to faff about logging in each time.

We used to have keys to give out for the front door, but the Charity we live with did not appreciate this so we had to stop. Once you are inside, you're able to unlock/lock the front door for others. If you're the first in or last out, make sure the front door is open or locked as appropriate!

The back door is on the opposite side of the building from the front door, at our end. There are 3, the one we use is Marked 'Unit C, D & E' - https://maps.app.goo.gl/DTZM8WA734E5fwRr9 There is a path along the end of the building to avoid walking its length there and back - this is a convenient shortcut.

There is additional info of varying usefulness here - some of it is out of date but the vibes are right: https://wiki.57north.org.uk/admin/membership_induction

Cheers, H
